A Brief History of Wayne County

Home to the City of Detroit, Wayne County contains nearly 2 million residents and is one of the largest counties in area in the U.S. The county is bounded by the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair to the east, with the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge as international crossings to Canada.

In 1796, Wayne County was named after the American Revolutionary War general “Mad Anthony” Wayne and its boundaries set to encompass most of Michigan. As time went on, the boundaries shrank to make way for additional counties. Currently, the Metro Detroit area also includes Macomb and Oakland counties as well (to the north and west, respectively).

Transportation in and out of Detroit resembles a wheel, with several freeways (I-75, I-94, and I-96) appearing on maps as spokes radiating out from downtown. Not incidentally, these freeways were among the first established to serve the “Motor City.” In addition, the county is served by the Detroit Metro Airport, the Willow Run Airport, and the Detroit City Airport.

Like Detroit itself, Wayne County has lost residents for the past few decades and continues to struggle economically. And although the economy continues to diversify, the health of the auto industry still has a disproportionate impact upon the county and the metropolitan area as a whole. This has strongly affected crime rates in the city which are higher than the rest of the state for both violent and property crimes.
